Checking your phone at work: what its presence actually costs you

Moving your phone out of reach is a smaller fix than it is usually sold as. A 2024 meta-analysis of 33 studies and 4,368 participants found the mere presence of a phone had no significant effect on cognition. What costs you is picking it up, so aim the change at the checking rather than at the phone. This article covers what the two meta-analyses in this area actually measured, why the face-down and other-room questions have less behind them than they sound, and which half of the phone problem is worth your effort.

Does a phone on your desk actually cost you anything?

Less than the advice around it promises, and the largest test of the claim came back empty. Hartanto and colleagues published a four-level meta-analysis in Technology, Mind, and Behavior in 2024, pooling 166 effect sizes from 53 samples across 33 studies and 4,368 participants. The measured effect of a phone being merely present was d = -0.02, with a confidence interval running from -0.06 to 0.01 and a p-value of .246. A null result, not a small one.

What was being tested there has a name in this literature, the brain drain effect: the proposal that a phone within sight holds part of your attention even while you ignore it. A second meta-analysis went at it directly.

Douglas Parry, writing in Media Psychology in 2023, pooled 56 studies and 7,093 participants across six analyses, and one outcome moved. Working memory capacity came out lower when a phone was present. The rest held steady, and Parry calls the support limited, the effect smaller than the theory predicted, and the underlying studies heterogeneous and generally underpowered.

One null result and one partial. Both carry caveats.

Single experiments still find a cost, which is why the pooling was needed in the first place. Skowronek, Seifert and Lindberg ran adults aged 20 to 34 through a concentration and attention test with a phone present and absent, and reported in Scientific Reports in 2023 that performance dropped when the phone was there. One experiment can be sound and still not tell you what to do at your desk, which is the gap a meta-analysis exists to close.

Read the whole set for what it supports and no further. A phone lying beside your keyboard is not measurably eating your working day, and anyone telling you otherwise is repeating a claim the pooled evidence does not carry. Hartanto and colleagues put the practical version in their own paper: there is little reason at present to think complete isolation from smartphones at work would improve productivity and performance. That leaves the thing you actually notice, the checking, unexplained by any of it.

Where should you keep your phone while you work?

Somewhere you have to decide to reach it. The evidence supports nothing more precise than that, and the reason is worth knowing. Hartanto and colleagues tested whether the way researchers manipulated the phone changed anything: on the desk, face down, in a bag, in another room. None of it moderated the effect. Demographic factors did not moderate it either, and neither did how dependent on their phones the participants said they were.

That is awkward for most of the advice built on this topic. The face-down question, the drawer question and the other-room question all assume a graded effect, where each step of distance buys back a little attention. In the pooled data there was no effect to grade.

Which frees you to choose the spot on other grounds. What follows is this site's reading rather than a research finding: the difference that matters is between a phone you can reach without thinking and one that costs you a visible decision. Beside the keyboard, it gets picked up in the pause after a hard paragraph, before you have registered choosing anything. In a drawer, you notice yourself opening the drawer. Nothing about the drawer improves your attention. It makes the reach visible to you, which is a different and more useful thing.

One case does call for distance, and it has nothing to do with concentration. If your phone still delivers alerts you have not silenced, putting it in another room is a crude fix for a settings problem, and it stops working on the first day you need the phone with you. Silence what does not need to reach you inside a work block, keep the one channel that does, and tell the two people who might use it. After that the phone's location stops carrying weight it was never able to carry.

Location is the cheap move. It is not the one that changes your day.

How do you stop reaching for it in the first place?

Two different habits wear the same clothes here. In one, the phone reaches you: a banner, a buzz, a name lighting up the screen, all arriving on somebody else's schedule. In the other, you reach the phone, with nothing prompting it, in the gap where the work turned hard or turned dull. From outside they look identical. They need opposite fixes.

The first is a settings problem, and settings are cheap because you decide once and the decision holds. Turn off everything that is not a genuine emergency channel for the length of a block, then check the rest on a schedule you picked. The focus pillar covers the general version of this across every device you own, and the phone is only the loudest instance of it.

The second resists settings entirely, because the decision happens in your own head and no alert is involved. What helps in practice is making the gap short enough to sit through. The Pomodoro Technique is built around that: 25 minutes is a small enough ask that waiting for the bell rarely feels like discipline, and anything surfacing mid-sprint gets written down instead of chased. The check moves into the break, where it costs you nothing at all.

Writing the pull down is the step people skip, and it is the one that tells you what you are dealing with. Keep a line beside the keyboard for two weeks. Each time you catch yourself reaching, write one word for what the work was doing at that moment. You are not chasing a clean run of days here. You are looking for the moment that repeats, because that is the one worth designing around.

Most people find a single moment carries the bulk of it.

None of this requires believing the phone drains you while it sits there. The reason to put it out of easy reach is not that the research says it costs you attention, because pooled across studies it does not. The reason is that the reach is a self-interruption, and a self-interruption is the only kind that happens at a moment you chose.

How does your working style change the answer?

None of the studies above sorted people by how they organise their work, so nothing in this section is a research finding.

Architect, Sprinter, Visionary and Improviser describe how somebody runs a week when nobody is supervising. What changes between them is what the phone is for during working hours, and that changes which fix is worth your time.

If you already defend long blocks, closest to the Architect, the phone is a small line item in a system you have built. Deep Work asks you to strip every interruption out of a block beforehand, and the phone is the easiest of them to strip, so remove it and expect no measurable lift from the removal itself. What is worth counting is the unprompted reach that no longer happens. Judge the change on how often you left the work, not on how the block felt.

If you work in bursts, nearer the Sprinter, an outright ban tends to last about three days. Put the phone in the break instead. A Pomodoro Technique round ends every 25 minutes, so the longest you ever wait is short, and the check becomes a scheduled thing rather than a lapse. Reaching for it mid-round is a signal to shorten the round, not evidence that the method does not suit you.

The Visionary reaches for the phone as a research tool. Something in the work raises a question, the device answers questions, and the reach is real work right up to the point where you surface somewhere else entirely. That opening stretch is what makes it hard to catch. Put the rule at the device rather than at the impulse. Questions go on the same paper list during your block, and the phone answers them in one pass afterwards.

If your day is interrupt-driven, often the Improviser, the phone is where work arrives and removing it was never on the table. Separating its two jobs is. One channel stays live because real requests come through it; everything else waits for the pass you already make between tasks. One change this week, then. Pick the block you care most about, put the phone out of arm's reach for its length, and keep a tally of the times you reached for it anyway. Two weeks of that tally tells you more than the studies above can, because it is measured at your desk rather than in a lab.
